Organic materials. Modern angles. Curvilinear shapes. The mid-century modern aesthetic is back with a vengeance. However, for some families, it never left. Since they were newlyweds, our adventurous couple loved the clean lines, functionality and sleek innovation that characterized this unique era.

To build their stunning new lakeside home, they unpacked their noteworthy artwork collection, iconic furniture and inventive spirit. What they needed most - and got - was a design firm that could take decades of collectables, blend in comfort and technology and come up with a memorable composition.

The designers at Katherine Elizabeth Designs first focused on the kitchen and great room—creating a contemporary, lofty two-story-high room, topped with a dramatic period metal chandelier and grounded with reflective floor lights. At one end, the towering fireplace is built of tile that looks like stone. It is flanked by floating walnut shelves that hold statement ceramic vases. To keep the lovely expanse of windows that overlook the panoramic water view, the designers camouflaged a 55” TV behind a prominent painting above the fireplace. A striking cream and gray geometric rug stretches out on the quarter-sawn linear oak floors.

The kitchen literally gleams with cabinets in a high gloss white lacquer finish. Niches abound—housing contemporary cabinets that play off the light in the room and the shimmer of the glass sculptures within. Floating shelves are stationed to the right and left of the sink window. The natural walnut that anchors the island is topped in Cambria quartz—the countertop and backsplash of choice throughout the kitchen.

But there’s much more.

Katherine Elizabeth Designs created an oh-so-practical walk out suite for their clients’ son, daughter-in-law and new grandchild…complete with a full kitchen, separate great room, two bedrooms and children’s area.

They recovered and refurbished mid-century treasures and layered new furniture and textures throughout the house…from the expansive dining room to the dramatic art walls.

The result is both old and new…both fresh and nostalgic. The artwork speaks, the kitchen shines, the walls and floors create a framework for a house that transcends time.
