WOMAN CAVE

Featured: Country Magazine – February 2017

Sometimes, a designer's bright idea can completely transform how a family lives in their home. The first inspiration for the Woman Cave in the back room of a client's splendid estate began with the morning sun that poured through the windows at just the right angle. The second inspiration was a captivating painting of an angel, imbued with color, serenity and personality. And the third inspiration for the room was the pastoral garden setting that the owners wanted to bring inside. It turned out to be a magical combination.

First, however, the cavernous room needed balance.

The domineering ceiling was brought to scale with generous 8x8 beams and curved feminine corbels that resemble archways in a formal English garden. Painted a soft dove white, the overhead frame gives the room dimension and order.

Gathered 'round in the center of the room is a chevron area rug with a remarkable walnut directors chair for the husband and a more feminine damask leaf-themed chair for the wife. A leather ottoman invites comfort and showcases its texture with its dramatic swag of bullion fringe.

The intertwining window treatments were streamlined to frame the panoramic views of the pond and golf course. A metal button detail on the front edge and antique mirror finials are only a few of their beautiful, quiet touches. In addition to the angelic artistic inspiration, black and white sketches of nudes, a floral still life and other well-chosen works of art grace the walls.

What started as a unique concept of light, art and garden influences has developed into a gathering place where the family begins and ends each day. It has become a true inspiration and bright spot in their lives.
