A Spa-Like Transformation: Elevating the Primary Bath to New Heights

When our empty-nester clients in Barrington, IL decided to reimagine their home, their primary suite was at the top of their list. With their children grown and out of the house, they embraced the idea of prioritizing themselves, transforming their home into a sanctuary of elegance, self-care, and functionality. At the heart of their vision was their outdated primary bath—a space that, while functional, lacked the sophistication and luxury that matched the rest of their home.

This renovation was part of a larger project that included reimagining other areas, such as converting a classic dining room into a wine room perfect for hosting adult gatherings. However, for our clients, the crown jewel of this transformation was the primary bath. They dreamed of an escape—a place that felt like a retreat to an upscale spa every day.

Before the renovation, the bathroom was unremarkable, dominated by outdated features that limited its potential. A triple medicine cabinet made the room feel cramped and cluttered, while the oversized bathtub consumed valuable square footage. The overall design was drab, lacking the thoughtful details and modern touches that make a space truly shine.

Our design process began by listening to our clients' ideas and goals and understanding how they wanted this space to enhance their daily lives. The KED Interiors team completely re-imagined the space. Let’s walk through our design process and the transformation.

Step 1: Interpret & Discover

At KED Interiors our first client meeting is always filled with excitement and energy. It’s here that we uncover what mattered most to our clients. They wanted their home to feel like a retreat: elegant, functional, and perfectly tailored to their needs. They both had very specific ideas of what they wanted but were unsure of how to bring them to life. A detailed questionnaire helped us understand their preferences, and after careful discussions, we presented a proposal outlining the scope, investment, and timeline. With their approval, we got to work! After careful consideration, we decided to name this project, “Timeless Tranquility”.

Step 2: Building the Foundation
The fun continues, and this is where our creativity and innovation really begin to shine. Next, we measured, photographed, and sketched the space. During this Schematic Design phase, we explored their preferred styles and developed a color palette that reflected their taste. Budget discussions shaped our choices as we crafted CAD layouts, considering every detail—furniture placement, architectural elements, lighting, and materials. This was where their vision began to take form.

Step 3: Bringing the Vision to Life

Now onto one of the most rewarding phases of the project—revealing our concepts and plans in a way our clients can truly experience. In the Design phase, we move beyond ideas to create a detailed, tangible plan that feels real and inspiring.

For this bathroom remodel, we began by designing custom cabinetry, refining lighting schemes, and selecting materials that exuded timeless elegance. Every choice, from window treatment textiles to durable finishes, was carefully curated with their lifestyle in mind. The highlight of this phase? Life-like 3D renderings. These stunning visuals allowed our clients to see their new space take shape before construction even began. From the placement of the fixtures to the textures of the finishes, the renderings captured every detail, giving them confidence and excitement about the transformation to come. This step is where design becomes more than a plan—it becomes a vision our clients can truly enjoy and anticipate.

Believe it or not, the images below aren’t photographs of the actual space—they’re incredibly realistic 3D renderings. These renderings capture every detail of the design, from lighting and tile to cabinetry and finishes. While they may seem purely fun and visually impressive, they play a pivotal role in the design process. At this stage, we can fine-tune and adjust elements before construction begins, ensuring every selection is perfect. This proactive approach minimizes change orders and prevents on-site delays, keeping the project on track.
